# Inside Zone

## Short Definition

A run where all blockers zone-step playside and the runner reads the first down lineman, hitting the best gap from the A-gap through the C-gap.

## Definition

Inside zone is a gap-read run built on lateral movement and post-snap decision-making. At the snap, every offensive lineman takes a lateral step toward the playside and works to reach or secure their assigned defender. The running back aims at a landmark—typically the outside hip of the center—and reads the first down lineman from the playside tackle inside. Where that defender goes, the back goes opposite.

No specific gap is designated pre-snap. The line creates movement across the front; the back finds the best available gap from A through C based on what the defense does. That adaptability makes inside zone hard to scheme against—the correct gap changes with every snap depending on how the defense pursues, and the runner has to see it in real time.

## Example

"Inside zone—back reads the 3-tech at the snap. The 3-tech slants inside chasing the A-gap. Back presses the B, guard can't reach the 3-tech but the tackle got movement on the end. Clean cut behind the guard, eight yards. That's the read telling him exactly where to go."

## Common Confusion

Inside zone looks like a simple dive because the runner hits inside. It's not—the gap the back hits is determined post-snap by reading the first down lineman. A back who predetermines his gap and ignores his read misses the crease. The read is the play, not the direction.
