# Inadvertent Whistle

## Short Definition

An unintended whistle blown by an official that prematurely stops a live play, giving the offense the choice to accept the spot or replay the down.

## Definition

When an official accidentally blows the whistle during live play—before the natural conclusion of the down—the ball is immediately dead at the location and moment of the whistle. Neither team caused the error.

The inadvertent whistle rule protects the offense: the team is given a choice between accepting the result of the play up to the point of the whistle, or replaying the down from the original line of scrimmage. The defense has no input in this ruling—the choice belongs entirely to the offense.

## Example

"The official blows the whistle thinking the flag was pulled—but the flag is still on the runner's belt with 8 yards gained. Inadvertent whistle. The offense can take the 8 yards to that spot or replay the down."

## Common Confusion

An inadvertent whistle is not a penalty on either team. It is an officiating error and is handled as a protective rule for the offense. The offense always holds the choice of spot or replay—the defense cannot decline or accept anything in this situation.
