# Illegal Shift

## Short Definition

A 5-yard pre-snap penalty called when multiple offensive players shift positions and fail to come to a complete stop for at least one second before the snap.

## Definition

An offensive shift is when multiple players move simultaneously to new positions before the snap. A shift is legal as long as every moving player comes to a complete stop and remains motionless for at least one second before the ball is snapped.

Illegal shift is called when the offense snaps the ball while players are still settling from a shift, or when players fail to hold their set position for the required one second. Penalty: 5 yards.

Shifts are an important flag football tool—changing the entire formation pre-snap creates alignment stress for the defense. The illegal shift penalty is not about the shift itself but about the failure to reset properly before snapping.

## Example

"The offense shifts from a stack formation into trips right, and the quarterback snaps the ball before everyone has come to a stop. Illegal shift—five yards, repeat the down."

## Common Confusion

Shifting is legal—it's the failure to reset and hold for one second that draws the penalty. Teams can shift formations as much as they want between plays as long as every player comes to a complete stop before the snap.
