# Illegal Forward Pass

## Short Definition

A penalty called when a forward pass is thrown from beyond the line of scrimmage, or when a second forward pass is thrown on the same play.

## Definition

A forward pass is illegal when: the passer's feet are beyond the line of scrimmage at the moment of release, or when a second forward pass is thrown after the first has already crossed the line of scrimmage on the same play.

In flag football an additional violation applies: any forward pass thrown after a ball carrier has crossed the line of scrimmage on a designed run also triggers the penalty. Penalty: 5 yards from the previous spot and loss of down.

## Example

"The quarterback scrambles 3 yards beyond the line of scrimmage, then launches a forward pass downfield to an open receiver. Illegal forward pass—5 yards and loss of down. You have to release before the line."

## Common Confusion

A forward pass is defined by the direction of travel, not the delivery style. An underhand shovel pass that travels forward from behind the line is a legal forward pass. A pass thrown while the quarterback's foot is even slightly beyond the line—regardless of body position or arm angle—is an illegal forward pass.
