# Illegal Formation

## Short Definition

A foul for not aligning with the required number of players on the line or in eligible positions.

## Definition

Illegal formation is a pre-snap offensive foul for failing to line up with the required number of players on the line of scrimmage or in legal positions. The rules require seven players on the line of scrimmage and five players who are ineligible to receive a forward pass aligned in specific positions. Violations of these requirements—too few players on the line, an ineligible receiver split wide without a report to the officials, players in improper positions—are illegal formation.

The foul is called before or at the snap and results in a five-yard penalty. It often occurs on hurry-up situations, motion-heavy offenses, or trick plays where alignment communication breaks down. Players who are supposed to be on the line fail to get there, or a player in motion fails to reset properly before the snap.

Coaches and officials both watch formation alignment carefully. A well-coached offense uses motion and shifting precisely because it changes eligibility and alignment—but every shift must result in a legal formation before the snap.

## Example

"The tight end goes in motion and doesn't reset on the line before the snap—the offense now has only six players on the line of scrimmage. Illegal formation, five yards. The hurry-up tempo caused the breakdown."

## Common Confusion

Illegal formation is called on unusual formations or trick plays. It applies to standard formations too—if the offense lines up with six players on the line of scrimmage instead of seven, or with fewer than five ineligible players positioned correctly, it's illegal formation regardless of how normal the play looks. The foul is about the alignment, not the intent.
