# Hot Route

## Short Definition

A pre-snap adjustment converting one receiver's route to a quick throw designed to beat an identified blitz before the extra rushers can arrive.

## Definition

A hot route is a pre-snap adjustment that converts one receiver's designed route to a quick throw—a flat, a slant, or a hitch—specifically to counter an identified blitz. When the quarterback recognizes more rushers than the protection can handle, he signals the hot receiver before the snap. If the blitz comes, the quarterback releases immediately to the hot receiver before the extra rusher arrives.

The hot route solves the blitz's fundamental advantage: the extra rusher gets to the quarterback before any route has time to develop. A hot throw leaves the quarterback's hand in less than two seconds—fast enough to beat any blitz if identified and executed correctly.

The communication happens through hand signals, verbal calls, or eye contact in the pre-snap window. The hot receiver adjusts his route and knows he is the immediate target if the blitz fires. The quarterback's read is binary: blitz comes, throw hot immediately; blitz doesn't come, execute the original read progression.

The risk is misidentification. A quarterback who diagnoses a blitz that doesn't come throws early to a receiver running a hot route against coverage that wasn't blitzing—turning a designed deep route into a short throw against a defender who isn't where the hot route expected him to be.

## Example

"Quarterback sees six rushers before the snap—signals hot to the slot receiver. Blitz comes exactly as read. Ball out in 1.4 seconds to the flat route. The blitz arrived at 2.1 seconds. Hot route beat the pressure by seven-tenths of a second. That's the mechanism."

## Common Confusion

Hot route and audible are different adjustments. An audible changes the entire play for all eleven players. A hot route changes only one receiver's assignment—typically from a designed route to a quick flat or slant—in response to an identified blitz. The rest of the play runs as called. Hot routes are a pre-snap protection adjustment; audibles are a full play change.
