## Definition

Hook-curl is a zone drop technique where the defender settles at 10 to 12 yards depth, reads the quarterback's eyes, and contests any route that enters the hook-curl window—hooks, curls, digs, and crossers settling at his depth. He's not running to a landmark and stopping; he's reading and positioning based on where the routes are developing.

The hook-curl defender is the interior underneath player in most Cover 3 and Cover 4 structures. His positioning bridges the gap between the flat zone outside him and the deep zones above him. Routes that settle in the intermediate middle—the most common throws on third and medium—are his responsibility.

Reading the quarterback is central to the technique. A hook-curl defender who chases receivers rather than reading the passer gets displaced easily. One who reads eyes and positions anticipatorily can take away routes that seem open before the ball is released.

## Example

"Hook-curl defender drops to 12 yards and reads the quarterback's eyes—they track to the dig route coming across. He's already positioned before the receiver makes his break. The quarterback sees it covered and moves on. That's the read, not the reaction."

## Common Confusion

Hook-curl and curl-flat describe different zone responsibilities. Curl-flat prioritizes the flat—the defender drives on flat routes aggressively. Hook-curl drops to a specific depth landmark and reads from there, contesting whatever enters his zone without hard-driving on one level. The hook-curl defender is more patient; the curl-flat defender is more reactive.
