# Holdout

## Short Definition

A contracted player's voluntary absence from team activities to force a new deal—daily fines accumulate, but a team cannot cut a player solely for holding out.

## Definition

A holdout occurs when a player under contract voluntarily refuses to report to training camp, OTAs, or other team activities as leverage to renegotiate their contract. Players hold out when they believe their current contract undervalues them—typically after outperforming their deal—and want to force the team to provide a new contract or extension before they return.

The financial mechanics of a holdout create pressure on both sides. Teams can fine players for missing mandatory activities, reducing their weekly salary by a set per-day amount during the holdout. Players forfeit potential performance incentives and risk injury during the missed time. In some cases, missing a full season counts against a player's accrued years under the CBA, extending the timeline to free agency.

Holdouts are most common among running backs, where the combination of a physically demanding position, short career windows, and historically low positional value under the CBA creates the greatest gap between player contribution and contract compensation. Wide receivers and defensive players also hold out, but the tactic is used most frequently in the backfield.

The negotiating dynamics are asymmetric. A team has less leverage when the player is irreplaceable—a franchise quarterback holding out commands a different response than a depth player. The team has more leverage when the position is replaceable, the player is under contract for multiple years, or the financial difference is manageable. Most holdouts resolve before the regular season begins.

## Common Confusion

A holdout is not a suspension. The player voluntarily stays away as contract leverage—teams can fine them daily for missing mandatory activities but cannot cut a contracted player solely for holding out.
