# Holding

## Short Definition

A foul for illegally grabbing an opponent—offensive holding is 10 yards and replay the down; defensive holding is 5 yards with an automatic first down.

## Definition

Holding is a foul for illegally restricting or grabbing an opponent in a way that prevents them from moving freely within the rules. Offensive holding is called when a blocker grabs a defender outside the body frame—hooking an arm, clutching a jersey at the shoulder or back, or pulling a rusher down by any grip that goes beyond the legal contact area of the blocker's body in front of the defender. Defensive holding is called when a defender grabs a receiver beyond five yards from the line of scrimmage before a pass is thrown.

Offensive holding is the most consequential penalty that does not involve physical danger—ten yards from the previous spot with a replay of the down. It negates the yardage gained on the play, costs ten yards, and forces the offense to repeat the down. A ten-yard gain on first down that draws an offensive holding call becomes first and twenty. A screen pass that gains fifteen yards with a holding call becomes first and twenty from the original spot. The penalty effectively reverses plays that appear to have succeeded.

The enforcement is designed to address blocking that exceeds legal technique rather than incidental contact in the natural violence of line play. Interior linemen engage defenders physically on every snap; the line between legal blocking and holding is determined by the position of the blocker's hands and body relative to the defender. Hands inside the defender's frame, on the chest or shoulders, maintaining position through upper-body leverage is legal. Hands gripping the jersey, arms hooking around a defender's body, or any grip that constrains the defender's path beyond the blocker's own body position is holding.

Holding is the most inconsistently enforced foul in football because the line between legal and illegal contact is difficult to see from most camera angles and impossible to observe simultaneously across all five line gaps on every snap. Officials call visible holds—those that significantly affect a play or that involve clear grasping—and miss the subtle holds that occur on every snap. This inconsistency is a feature of the game rather than a failure of officiating: calling every technical hold would produce a holding flag on nearly every passing play.

## Example

"Left tackle can't stay in front of the pass rusher—he hooks the end's outside arm and drags him down. Holding, offense, ten yards. The sack the tackle was trying to prevent happened anyway. Now it's first and twenty instead of second and eight. The penalty cost more than the sack would have."

## Common Confusion

Holding is called on any grabbing. That's too broad. Incidental contact and hand-fighting are part of line play. Holding requires that the defender's movement be illegally restricted—arm-bar blocked, jersey grabbed, pulled down from behind. The distinction matters because calling every grab would stop every play.
