The receiver releases vertically, sells depth to move the defender back, plants hard on his outside foot at 5 to 8 yards, and snaps back to face the quarterback. If the timing is right, the ball arrives just as the receiver completes his turn. The route's effectiveness is based on the cushion the defender gives. A corner playing 8 yards off has to close that distance after the receiver stops—the hitch gains yards. A corner playing press or tight man makes the hitch much harder because he's already in position when the receiver stops. Hitch timing is a quarterback-receiver connection built in practice. The receiver stops at the same depth every time; the quarterback throws at the same moment in his footwork every time. When they're synchronized, the ball is already in the air before the receiver finishes his stop, which eliminates the hesitation window for a corner to break on the ball. Hitches are the foundation of the Smash concept on the outside and the curl-flat combination on the inside. Their predictability is their strength—defenses know they're coming, but against the right leverage, they're still open. ## Example "Five yards, plant, turn—the ball is there. That's a hitch working against off coverage. The corner had no chance to close from eight yards before the throw arrived." ## Common Confusion Hitch and comeback are confused. A hitch stops at a shorter depth (5-8 yards) and the receiver faces the quarterback squarely. A comeback goes deeper (10-14 yards) and the receiver breaks back toward the sideline on an angle.
