# High-Low Read

## Short Definition

A two-receiver combination with one route high and one low on the same defender—the quarterback throws to whichever level the defender vacates.

## Definition

The high-low read exploits the physical impossibility of covering two receivers at different depths with one defender. One receiver runs a route underneath—typically a flat, a hitch, or a curl. Another runs a route over the top—typically a corner, a post, or a seam. The quarterback identifies the defender between them and reads his movement.

If the defender expands to take the deep route, the ball goes underneath. If he stays underneath to take the short route, the ball goes over the top. The quarterback makes one read and throws to the window the defender left open.

High-low concepts are the structural building block of most modern passing attacks. Smash is a high-low—hitch underneath, corner route over the top, corner as the read key. Curl-flat is a high-low—curl at intermediate depth, back in the flat, linebacker as the read key. The quarterback is always reading one defender and throwing away from him.

The concept works best against zone coverage, where the single defender has defined territorial responsibilities. Against man coverage, both receivers are individually covered and the high-low leverage disappears—the man defender doesn't have to choose between two zones.

## Example

"Watch the linebacker—he drops to cover the curl. As soon as he sits down, the back in the flat is completely open. The quarterback saw that conflict before the ball was snapped."

## Common Confusion

High-low is confused with any two-receiver combination. The defining element is reading a single defender between the two routes. If there's no shared defender being read, there's no high-low—just two individual routes.
