For quarterbacks, hand size is weighted heavily because small hands correlate with fumble risk in cold weather and difficulty gripping a standard-size football. Teams flag quarterback prospects under 9 inches, though several successful quarterbacks have played below that threshold.

For pass rushers and defensive linemen, larger hands improve the ability to control blockers, grab jersey, and strip the ball from ball carriers. Offensive linemen also benefit from larger hands for grip strength in pass protection.
