The gunslinger makes throws others won't attempt—back-shoulder fades into coverage, deep corner routes with a safety over the top, red zone back-shoulders with the corner attached—because his belief in his arm and his receivers exceeds his concern about the outcome.

The archetype is associated with specific players whose careers exemplified the combination of spectacular production and spectacular interceptions: Brett Favre is the canonical gunslinger, but the label has been applied to quarterbacks across eras who shared the compulsive aggressiveness and the big-arm willingness to take on any throw.
