# Gunner

## Short Definition

A special teams player who releases downfield on punts against a jammer—arriving at the catch point to force a fair catch or pin the returner inside the 10.

## Definition

The gunner is a punt-coverage specialist whose entire job is to reach the returner as quickly as possible and eliminate him as a threat. He lines up wide on the punt team, releases at the snap against a jammer trying to slow and reroute him, and races to converge on the returner at the catch point. Speed, release technique, and open-field tackling are the complete skill set. There is no blocking, no route running, no pass protection—one job, executed at full sprint.

The jammer battle at the line of scrimmage is where the play is often decided. A jammer who redirects the gunner outside his lane and forces a two-step delay has meaningfully reduced the gunner's impact on the punt. A gunner who wins his release cleanly in the first two steps is downfield before the ball reaches the apex of the kick. That early positioning is what creates fair catches at the 10-yard line rather than returns to the 30.

Lane discipline is as important as speed. A gunner who abandons his assigned corridor to pursue the returner at a wrong angle can be washed out of the play by a single return blocker who has positioned between the gunner and the returner. The correct approach is from the proper angle—outside-in or inside-out depending on the assignment—that forces the returner to cut back toward pursuit rather than away from it.

The best gunners force fair catches or pin returners inside the 10-yard line without making a tackle. A fair catch at the 8-yard line is an elite punt outcome that shows up in the punter's net average—but the gunner's lane discipline and release technique are what produced it. The tackle number undersells the position entirely.

## Example

"Gunner wins his release at the line—beats the jammer in two steps, straight line to the returner. The returner sees him coming and signals fair catch at the 11. No tackle in the box score. Gunner won the play before the ball came down."

## Common Confusion

Gunners are evaluated on tackles. The position's actual job is to eliminate the returner's vision and options before the fair catch—forcing a fair catch, limiting the return lane, or controlling where the ball is fielded. A gunner who creates a fair catch with no tackle in the box score has done his job.
