# Goal Line

## Short Definition

The plane that marks the front edge of the end zone and determines whether a score has occurred.

## Definition

The goal line is the line marking the front boundary of the end zone—the plane a ball carrier must cross to score a touchdown. It runs the full width of the field at each end and is the most consequential yard line in football. Every goal-line play, every goal-line stand, every quarterback sneak is a contest over this single line.

The goal line plane extends vertically—a ball breaking the plane at any height scores, even if the carrier is tackled short and extends the ball across. Officials watch for the ball crossing the plane, not the player's body. A runner who fumbles while breaking the plane has still scored.

Goal-line defense is built around protecting this line specifically. Defenders compress into the smallest formation on the field, assign every gap, and play with physical leverage rather than coverage depth. There is nowhere to retreat—the end zone is immediately behind them.

## Example

"The runner is hit at the one—he extends the ball. Does it cross the plane? The official calls it a touchdown. The ball broke the goal line plane before the knee was down. That's the only thing that matters on the goal line."

## Common Confusion

The goal line and the end zone are used interchangeably. The goal line is the front edge of the end zone—a single plane. The end zone is the 10-yard area behind it. A player scores by crossing the goal line plane, not by reaching the back of the end zone. The goal line is the threshold; the end zone is the territory beyond it.
