# Go Route

## Short Definition

A straight vertical route run at full speed with no break—used to beat man coverage deep, stretch zone defenses, or clear space for underneath routes.

## Definition

The go route—also called a fly, vertical, or streak—sends the receiver straight upfield at full speed with no break. There is no predetermined depth; the receiver runs until the ball is thrown or the play ends. The route's entire value is speed versus coverage.

Against man coverage, the go route is a direct test of the matchup: can the receiver outrun the corner to the deep ball? A speed advantage on the perimeter demands safety help and shapes everything the defense does on that side of the field. Even a go route that never gets thrown forces coverage commitments.

Against zone, the go route clears defenders off short and intermediate zones. A receiver streaking down the sideline pulls the corner and safety toward the deep, creating space underneath for crossing routes, curls, and hitches. Four verticals uses four simultaneous go routes specifically because the deep threat from every direction simultaneously stretches every zone's boundaries.

The go route's value is often in what it doesn't need to produce. As a clearing route, it creates space for the primary concept underneath. The threat is the point—not the completion.

## Example

"Outside receiver runs a go—the corner runs with him stride for stride. Safety rotates toward the sideline to help. Watch the slot: the safety just vacated the middle of the field. The go route accomplished its purpose without the ball ever going to it."

## Common Confusion

Go route and deep ball are different things. A deep ball is any long throw. A go route is a specific route pattern—straight vertical with no break. A post or corner route that travels deep is still a post or corner, not a go. The go route's defining characteristic is the absence of any break in any direction.
