## Definition

Gap sound is a pre-snap verification—the Mike linebacker or defensive play-caller scans the entire front and confirms that every potential running gap from the center outward has a designated defender responsible for it. The A-gaps between center and guards, the B-gaps between guards and tackles, the C-gaps outside the tackles, and the D-gaps outside tight ends are each checked against the front's alignment and gap assignments. If every gap has an owner, the front is gap sound. If any gap is unassigned, it is a structural problem the offense will find.

The check matters most in sub-packages and after motion shifts. A defense in base personnel has established gap assignments through its front alignment, and the Mike's gap-sound check confirms the known structure is intact. When the defense substitutes to nickel or dime, or when the offense uses pre-snap motion to shift the formation, gap assignments can inadvertently be disrupted—a linebacker who was responsible for the B-gap moves to match a receiver in motion, and the gap he was covering is now unaccounted for. The gap-sound check catches this before the snap.

On short-yardage downs—third and one, fourth and short, goal-line—the gap-sound check is non-negotiable. A single unaccounted gap in a compressed red zone situation is a touchdown. The offense is running the ball at the most direct path to the end zone; a defensive front that doesn't have every gap assigned before the snap has voluntarily created a lane.

Gap sound is a process, not a play call. Some teams use a verbal signal; others execute it silently. The outcome is the same: a confirmed front with no open gaps, a Mike linebacker who can tell every defender their assignment before the snap, and a run defense that starts with structural integrity rather than discovering holes at the point of attack.

## Example

"Mike scans the front before the snap—A-gap, B-gap, C-gap, both sides. He doesn't like the weak-side B-gap alignment after the defense subbed in nickel. He calls a check. The linebacker shifts. Now every gap is covered. That's gap sound—confirming the structure before the ball moves, not after it."

## Common Confusion

Gap sound is a verification process, not a formation. "Are we gap sound?" is a question, not a play. Some teams use it as a verbal signal; others do the check silently. The concept is the same: every gap must have an assignment.
