# Futures

## Short Definition

A long-term bet on a season outcome—Super Bowl winner, division champion, MVP—offering large payouts for early conviction before uncertainty narrows.

## Definition

A futures bet is a long-term wager on an outcome that won't be resolved until the end of a season or tournament—Super Bowl winner, conference champion, division winner, MVP, or season win total. Odds are posted before the season and update continuously as the season progresses and uncertainty narrows. The payout reflects the odds at the time the bet was placed, not the odds when it settles.

Futures offer the largest potential payouts in football betting because they carry the most uncertainty. A team at +2000 to win the Super Bowl in August has a 1-in-20 implied chance—if you bet $100 and they win, you collect $2,000 profit. The same team at the Super Bowl itself might be –130, paying just $77 profit on a $100 bet. The early odds compensate for the extended uncertainty.

Win totals are the most accessible futures market—books post a projected win count for each team (say, 9.5) and bettors wager over or under. These markets open in the spring and run through the season, adjusting after injuries, trades, and early-season results. They require a season-long conviction about a team rather than a single-game read.

Futures bets tie up money for months and carry liquidity risk—unlike a game bet that settles Sunday night, a Super Bowl future placed in September doesn't resolve until February. Books factor this time value into their pricing. Some books offer cash-out options on live futures positions, allowing bettors to lock in profit or cut losses before resolution.

## Example

"I took them at +700 to win the division in August. They're now –180 favorites with four games left. Same bet, five times the payout if I'd waited—that's why you bet futures early."

## Common Confusion

Futures odds get worse—not better—as the season progresses and uncertainty resolves. A Super Bowl winner at +1200 in August becomes –200 in January if they're the last team standing. The large payout in futures reflects the uncertainty at time of placement, not the probability at resolution. Waiting for confirmation before betting futures means paying a much higher price for the same outcome.
