## Definition

A future pick is a draft selection from an upcoming year included as currency in a trade. Most commonly expressed as "a future first" or "a future second," these picks allow teams to move players or current-year selections by extending payment into the following draft cycle.

Future picks are a core tool of roster management. A rebuilding team acquiring a future first from a playoff contender bets that the contender's success means the pick arrives late in the first round. A future pick from a struggling team could arrive in the top ten. The uncertainty cuts both ways: the team trading the future pick hopes their success makes it less valuable when it arrives.

High-profile trades often involve multiple future picks stacked to compensate for the premium of acquiring a player or moving up significantly. When analysts debate whether a team "gave up too much," future picks are typically the primary variable—the current-year cost is known, but the future cost depends on outcomes that haven't happened.

## Example

"They sent a future first to move up—next year's first, wherever it lands. If they win the Super Bowl that's a steal for whoever received it. If they collapse, they just paid top dollar."

## Common Confusion

A future pick and a current pick carry different values even at the same round. A future first's exact value is unknown because the team's next-season record—and where the pick lands—hasn't been determined yet. That uncertainty is why future picks are sometimes called "mystery boxes" in trade analysis.
