# Four Verticals

## Short Definition

A pass concept sending all four eligible receivers on vertical routes simultaneously, attacking every deep zone and forcing the defense to declare its coverage.

## Definition

Four Verticals puts every receiver on a go route and dares the defense to cover all of them deep. Zone coverages are built on assumptions about route distribution—Cover 3 assumes the quarterback won't threaten all three deep thirds at once; Cover 2 assumes two safeties can split the deep field between them. Four Verticals attacks every assumption simultaneously.

The quarterback reads the coverage. Against two-high, the seams between the safeties and the corners open—four vertical routes stress the boundaries of every zone. Against one-high, the single safety has to pick a side, and the quarterback throws away from him. Against man, the receivers have room to work and a chance to win one-on-one.

The concept builds in route conversions. If a corner sinks to take away the deep outside route, the receiver converts to a comeback. If the safety squeezes a seam, the receiver settles into the vacated space behind him. Four Verticals doesn't require the quarterback to throw it deep every time—it requires the defense to defend deep every time, which opens everything underneath.

In Air Raid systems the play is typically called "6" and is one of the five core concepts the offense masters completely before adding anything else.

## Example

"Watch the safeties—both of them are stuck in the middle with no good answer. The field-side seam is wide open and the quarterback sees it immediately."

## Common Confusion

Four Verticals is treated as a deep shot—a go-for-broke call. It's a read concept. The quarterback isn't trying to throw it deep every time; he's reading the coverage and taking what it gives. Against a team that sinks to protect the deep routes, the underneath conversions are the designed answer.
