# Force Player

## Short Definition

The defender responsible for setting the edge and preventing outside runs from turning the corner—typically the cornerback, safety, or linebacker.

## Definition

The force player is the edge defender assigned to set the perimeter in the run game—turning outside runs back inside where pursuit defenders are waiting. On any outside run to his side, his job is to close the outside lane and prevent the ball carrier from turning the corner. Everything gets funneled back inside by the force player; everything outside him is stopped by him.

Force responsibility is declared in the coverage call. CLOUD means the corner is the force player. SKY means the safety has force. BACKER means the linebacker sets the edge. Whoever has force sets it regardless of how the blocking develops—an unblocked force player is the perimeter's last line of containment.

Losing force containment is one of the most costly individual failures in run defense. A force player who gets reached, cut off, or washed inside allows outside runs to turn the corner with open field ahead and no defender in position to stop them.

## Example

"Outside zone to the boundary—corner has force. The tight end tries to reach-block him. Corner fights outside, maintains leverage, turns the back inside. The linebacker fills the cutback lane. That's force doing its job: everyone inside the force player does their job because the force player held the edge."

## Common Confusion

Force player is confused with the contain player. Contain keeps the quarterback inside the pocket on pass plays. Force turns outside runs back inside on run plays. They're related edge responsibilities but distinct assignments—a defender can have force on run and contain on pass, which are different jobs triggered by different keys.
