Football IQ is a player's ability to read, process, and respond to the game at the cognitive level—understanding defensive structures before the snap, processing coverage rotations mid-play, making fast correct decisions under pressure, and adapting to what the game presents rather than just executing memorized assignments.

High football IQ manifests differently by position. A quarterback with elite football IQ identifies the Mike linebacker, processes the coverage post-snap, and delivers the ball before pressure arrives. A linebacker reads the formation, anticipates the play type, and is already in position before the snap. A receiver runs option routes that convert to the most open window based on what the coverage gives him.

In draft evaluation, football IQ is assessed through film study and installation testing. Teams weight it heavily for complex scheme positions and at quarterback above all others.

"Watch his eyes in the pocket—already on his second read before the pressure gets there. That's football IQ you cannot coach. Either they process the game that fast or they don't."

## Common Confusion

Football IQ is not general intelligence. A player can be highly intelligent in other areas and struggle with football IQ—reading defensive structures, processing multiple assignments, and making fast decisions is sport-specific, trained through film study and repetition, not measured by standardized tests.
