# Football Character

## Short Definition

A scout's assessment of a prospect's work ethic, coachability, and love of the game—the intangible that determines whether physical tools ever get developed.

## Definition

Football character is a scout's assessment of the intangible qualities that determine whether a player's physical tools get developed and sustained at the NFL level—work ethic, coachability, preparation habits, love of the game, and competitive drive. It's the answer to the question: will this player do the work the NFL requires?

High football character is a multiplier on talent. A player who studies film obsessively, accepts coaching, practices with attention to detail, and competes at full effort every rep gives development staffs the most to work with. The same physical talent with poor football character may never develop because the investment in the off-field work isn't there.

Scouts assess football character through interviews, reference checks with college coaches, film study of practice habits, and observations during all-star game week. A prospect who asks detailed scheme questions in interviews signals differently than one who hasn't studied the team at all. The evaluation is subjective but the signal it sends shapes board positioning throughout all rounds.

## Example

"Every coach we talked to said the same thing: first one in, last one out, never missed a film session, knew everyone else's assignments. That's elite football character. The talent is a first-round grade. The character means the talent actually gets realized."

## Common Confusion

Football character and character concern are opposite ends of the same evaluation. Football character is a positive assessment—high work ethic, coachability, preparation. A character concern is a negative flag—behavioral issues, poor practice habits, off-field problems. Both are separate from talent and both influence draft positioning.
