# Floor

## Short Definition

A prospect's minimum projected outcome assuming normal development—the conservative baseline for what a player is reliably expected to become at the NFL level.

## Definition

Floor is a prospect's minimum projected outcome assuming normal development—the conservative baseline for what a player is reliably expected to become at the NFL level regardless of how everything else unfolds. A high floor means a prospect is unlikely to bust; a low floor means the miss risk is significant.

Floor is most useful as a risk management tool. Front offices making high picks want confidence that a player will contribute meaningfully even in a below-average development scenario. A high-floor prospect offers that confidence: the downside case still produces a quality player. A low-floor prospect requires betting on the ceiling materializing.

Floor and ceiling together define the range of outcomes for a prospect. A player with a high floor and a high ceiling is the rarest and most valuable kind—elite upside with minimal bust risk. A player with a high floor and a modest ceiling is a safe but limited investment. A player with a low floor and a high ceiling is the boom-or-bust archetype that divides evaluators.

## Example

"He's not going to be a superstar but he's going to play ten years in this league. His floor is a quality starter at the position. You take him in the second round knowing exactly what you're getting—a reliable player with a limited upside and almost no bust risk."

## Common Confusion

Floor and projection are different concepts. Projection describes what a scout expects to happen on average. Floor is specifically the conservative baseline—what the player is reliably expected to become even if development doesn't go as hoped. A prospect can have a higher projection than his floor if there's variance in the outcome.
