# Flood

## Short Definition

A three-receiver combination to one side at three depths—flat, intermediate, and deep—designed to outnumber zone defenders and stress the coverage.

## Definition

Flood overloads one side of the field by deploying three receivers at three levels: a flat route at 3 to 5 yards, an intermediate route at 10 to 12 yards, and a deep route at 15-plus yards. Zone defenders covering that side of the field have to choose which level to take, leaving the other two open.

The concept attacks any zone that doesn't have three defenders on the overloaded side. Cover 3 puts two defenders on each side in the intermediate and deep zones, with one flat player—flood gets three routes into that space. Cover 2 has a corner and a safety on each side, plus a flat player—still one too few for three routes at three levels.

The quarterback reads the coverage and works vertically: if the deep route is covered, he throws the intermediate; if the intermediate is also taken, he throws the flat. Most flood reads go from deep to short.

Flood is less effective against man coverage, which doesn't create the zone voids. Against two-high man, each receiver is individually covered and the concept becomes individual matchup football.

## Example

"Three receivers to the field side—deep, intermediate, flat. The corner can only cover one level. The quarterback reads top to bottom and finds the intermediate route open as the corner expands to the deep third."

## Common Confusion

Flood is confused with any trips or bunch alignment. The formation isn't the concept—the level separation is. Three receivers bunched at the same depth isn't a flood. The concept requires three distinct depth levels to create the high-low-flat stress on zone defenders.
