## Definition

Flex is a fantasy lineup roster spot that accepts multiple positions—typically running back, wide receiver, and tight end in most leagues, sometimes including quarterback. Instead of requiring a specific position, the flex slot allows managers to start whichever of those eligible positions provides the most value that week. Most leagues include one flex spot; some include two or three.

The flex spot amplifies the positional decisions in a lineup. In a standard lineup with two running back spots, one flex running back creates a potential three-running-back week for managers with three strong backs. Alternatively, the flex can be used for a third receiver, a strong tight end matchup, or any other eligible position. The flex decision—which player to put there versus who rides the bench—is often the most competitive lineup decision of the week.

Flex eligibility varies by platform. ESPN, Yahoo, and Sleeper all have slightly different rules for which positions can fill flex spots. Some high-stakes leagues add a superflex spot where all positions including quarterback are eligible—these dramatically increase the value of top quarterbacks.

In auction drafts and dynasty leagues, the flex spot influences how much managers value players at different positions. Running back scarcity combined with flex eligibility creates specific positional premium decisions that shape draft strategy from the first pick.

## Common Confusion

Flex is a lineup slot, not a player type. Any eligible position fills it—the decision is which of your eligible players maximizes expected points that week, not whether someone qualifies.
