# Flag Guarding

## Short Definition

An illegal act by the ball carrier that obstructs a defender's access to their flags—stiff-arming, lowering the elbow, or covering flags with the body.

## Definition

Flag guarding is the most common offensive penalty in flag football. Common forms include: stiff-arming toward a defender, lowering the arm or elbow over the flag, dropping the head to shield the flags, or using the jersey to cover flags.

Penalty in NFL FLAG and USA Football: 5 yards and loss of down. Some recreational leagues enforce 10 yards and loss of down.

## Example

"Flag guarding on the ball carrier—he lowered his elbow right as the defender reached for the flag. Five yards, loss of down."

## Common Confusion

Players argue flag guarding calls when they believe they were protecting the ball. The distinction: ball protection involves arms across the chest; flag guarding involves arms or body moving toward the hip flags.
