# Fifth-Year Option

## Short Definition

A team option allowing NFL teams to retain a first-round pick for a fifth season beyond his standard four-year rookie contract, at a CBA-set salary.

## Definition

Every first-round pick's rookie contract includes a fifth-year option—a unilateral team right to extend the player's contract for one additional season before he reaches unrestricted free agency. Teams must decide whether to exercise the option by May 3rd of the player's fourth season.

The salary for the fifth year is set by the CBA. For first-round picks who earn Pro Bowl recognition in their first three seasons, the fifth-year salary is based on the franchise tag rate at their position. For other first-round picks, it is based on the average of the third through 25th highest salaries at their position.

Exercising the fifth-year option buys a team one more season to evaluate a player before committing to a long-term extension or allowing him to test free agency. Declining the option sends a clear signal—the team does not intend to offer an extension, and the player will become a free agent after his fourth season. Teams frequently use the option decision as leverage in ongoing extension negotiations.

## Example

"They picked up his fifth-year option in April—that tells you everything. They think he's the answer at the position and want another year before committing to a long-term deal."

## Common Confusion

The fifth-year option applies only to first-round picks. Second-round and later picks reach free agency after their standard four-year rookie contracts with no option year. Exercising the option does not mean the team is committing to a long-term extension—it means they want one more year before making that decision.
