# Field Goal

## Short Definition

A 3-point scoring play—kicking through the uprights on fourth down when a touchdown is out of reach but the offense is within kicking range.

## Definition

A field goal scores 3 points when the kicker sends the ball through the goalposts—between the uprights and above the crossbar—from a scrimmage snap on any down, from any distance. The center snaps to the holder, who positions the ball for the kicker. The kick must clear the crossbar and pass between the upright extensions to score.

Field goals are most often attempted on fourth down when the offense is in scoring range but a touchdown is too risky to attempt. The decision to kick or go for it on fourth down is one of the most consequential in football, weighed against field position, score, and time remaining.

Range matters. NFL kickers are reliable inside 50 yards; attempts from 55+ yards carry significant miss risk. A missed field goal that falls short gives the defense possession at the spot of the kick. A missed kick that reaches the end zone results in a touchback, giving the opponent the ball at the 25-yard line. Field position within range affects how costly a miss is.

The value of a reliable kicker compounds across a game. Four converted field goals equal 12 points—equivalent to two touchdowns without the extra points. Games are won and lost at the margins, and field goal efficiency is one of the most consistent margin-makers in football.

## Example

"Fourth and eight at the 31—that's a 48-yard attempt. Coach sends the field goal unit. Snap, hold, kick—it's good. Three points. They didn't score a touchdown but they scored, and in a four-point game that's exactly what mattered."

## Common Confusion

Field goals and extra points use the same structure and personnel but are different plays. An extra point is kicked immediately after a touchdown from the 15-yard line and is worth 1 point. A field goal is attempted as a standalone scoring play from wherever the offense is on the field and is worth 3 points. Same kick, different context and value.
