# Fair Catch

## Short Definition

One hand raised by the returner—signaling they'll catch without returning, trading any yardage advance for protection from contact at the catch point.

## Definition

A fair catch is signaled by the punt or kick returner raising one hand above the head before catching the ball. The signal tells the coverage team they cannot contact the returner during or after the catch. In exchange, the returner cannot advance the ball—it's spotted at the catch point and the offense takes over there.

The fair catch trades the risk of a return for guaranteed possession at the catch point. A returner who catches a punt at his own 15-yard line and signals fair catch will start there. If he tries to return it and gets tackled at the 12, he lost three yards of field position. If he gets tackled at the 22, he gained seven. The calculation depends on his confidence in the return and the coverage team's speed.

Kicking teams use high hang-time punts to give gunners time to arrive before the returner can set up a return—making the fair catch the safer choice. A returner who calls a fair catch he didn't need costs his team potential field position. A returner who doesn't call a fair catch and gets immediately tackled costs it more.

In the NFL, a fair catch also enables a free kick from the spot—a rarely used rule that allows the receiving team to attempt a field goal with no rush.

## Example

"Punt comes down at the 18-yard line—gunner is three steps away. Returner raises his hand: fair catch. No contact, ball spotted at the 18. He read the coverage right. Trying to run that back means taking a hit in the open field with no setup. Fair catch was the right call."

## Common Confusion

A fair catch and a touchback are different outcomes. A touchback occurs when the ball is downed in the end zone—no returner catches it, or a returner kneels in the end zone. A fair catch is a live return where the returner signals to down the ball at the catch point rather than attempting a return. A touchback results in a fixed spot (the 25 in the NFL); a fair catch is spotted wherever the returner catches it.
