## Definition

FAAB (Free Agent Acquisition Budget) is a waiver wire system where each manager receives a fixed budget—typically $100 or $1,000—at the start of the season to spend on waiver wire claims throughout the year. When multiple managers want the same player, they submit blind bids from their budget. The highest bid wins the player and that amount is deducted from their remaining budget. Unspent budget does not carry over to the next season.

FAAB replaces the traditional waiver priority system where claims are processed in inverse standings order. It eliminates the frustration of losing a player despite being the first to recognize their value, replacing luck-of-the-standings with strategic bidding. A manager who correctly identifies a breakout player can outbid the field; one who wastes budget on the wrong players early loses leverage for the rest of the season.

Budget management is the hidden skill in FAAB leagues. Spending $40 on a player who contributes for two weeks and then disappears hurts more than a loss at one position—it removes leverage for future acquisitions. Elite FAAB managers track their remaining budget relative to the rest of the league throughout the season, calibrating bids against both what a player is worth and what opponents are likely to bid.

The blind nature of FAAB bids creates a game-within-the-game. Bidding $1 more than you think your closest competitor will bid is often the optimal strategy—paying exactly enough to win without overpaying. Reading league tendencies and individual manager bidding patterns is a legitimate edge.

## Common Confusion

FAAB bids are blind—you cannot see what others bid before submitting. The winning bid just needs to be the highest, not a large number. Overbidding wastes season-long budget; underbidding by $1 costs you the player. Managing budget across the season is as important as individual claim decisions.
