The interior linemen shade to the guards (typically 3-tech and 1-tech, or two 3-techs), creating B-gap pressure on both sides and leaving the center with no direct assignment. Linebackers play clean behind the front because the interior linemen occupy the guards before they can release. The even front is the foundation of the 4-3 and its modern descendants. It creates a structural advantage in the passing game—interior linemen shaded to the guard are closer to the B-gap rush lane than a head-up nose—and allows linebackers to flow to the ball without wading through blocks. The tradeoff is the A-gap. With no player over the center, the offense can reach the A-gap with the center alone on a zone run. Linebackers must be disciplined in their A-gap fits or inside runs find open lanes. ## Example "Both DTs are over the guards—even front. Watch the center: he has no one to block at the snap, so he releases to the Mike. That's the even front creating the linebacker's problem—he's got to make that play without any help." ## Common Confusion Even front and 4-3 are used interchangeably. The even designation describes the interior alignment—specifically that the center is uncovered—not the total number of linemen. A 4-2-5 with two 3-techs is still an even front.
