# End Zone

## Short Definition

The 10-yard scoring area at each end of the field—bounded by the goal line, end line, and sidelines, with the goal line itself part of the end zone.

## Definition

The end zone is the scoring area at each end of the field—ten yards deep in 11v11 football, bounded on the front by the goal line, on the back by the end line, and on the sides by the sidelines extended. The goal line itself is part of the end zone. A ball carrier or receiver who controls the ball while any part of it breaks the goal line plane—whether running, catching, or being contacted into the end zone—scores a touchdown immediately when that plane is broken.

The geometry of the end zone creates specific tactical realities. Routes that develop at intermediate depths—8 to 15 yards—end at the back of the end zone rather than continuing to create separation. A receiver running a corner route at 12 yards from the line of scrimmage has three yards of end zone remaining to work with before the ball is out of bounds behind him. This compression of available space is what makes red zone route design different from open-field concepts: every route is fighting the end zone boundary as well as the coverage.

The offense's own end zone is equally significant as a tactical hazard. A ball carrier who is brought down in his own end zone while in possession gives the defense a safety—two points and possession via a free kick. The back of the end zone functions as a danger zone for the offense in backed-up situations, where every deep drop, sack, or backward movement risks creating the safety. Quarterbacks in a backed-up situation measure their drops against the end line with the same awareness a receiver in the opposite end zone measures his feet against the back boundary.

In passing situations, the back of the opponent's end zone is itself a defender. A fade route that sails past the corner of the end zone and goes out of bounds has been defended without any defensive contact. The receiver must create separation within the end zone's depth constraint, the ball must arrive at a catchable point while the receiver has his feet in bounds, and the quarterback must throw with enough touch to allow the ball to come down in the narrow window between the coverage and the end line. The end zone boundary is a built-in coverage element that the defense exploits on every back-shoulder and fade concept.

## Example

"Receiver catches the ball at the one-yard line—his momentum carries him forward and the ball breaks the goal line plane before the flag is pulled. Touchdown. The end zone begins at the goal line, not behind it. The moment the ball crosses that plane in possession, the score counts."

## Common Confusion

The end zone begins at the goal line, not behind it. A receiver who catches the ball at the 1-yard line has not scored—they must carry or receive the ball across the goal line into the end zone. The ball must break the plane of the goal line while in possession.
