The position-agnostic label for a pass rusher who threatens the quarterback from the edge—applies to 4-3 defensive ends and 3-4 outside linebackers alike.

## Definition

EDGE is a position classification used in scouting, analytics, and broadcast to describe any player whose primary function is to threaten the quarterback from the edge of the defensive front. The label cuts across the traditional 4-3 defensive end and 3-4 outside linebacker distinction—if a player rushes the passer from the edge, he qualifies as an EDGE regardless of how his team officially designates him.

In a 4-3 scheme, the EDGE player is typically the defensive end aligned outside the tackle. In a 3-4, the role often belongs to the outside linebacker who stands up off the line. The position-agnostic label exists because modern defenses blend both structures and because evaluators care more about the skill set—edge setting, pass rush moves, bend and speed off the line—than whatever positional label a team assigns.

In draft evaluation, EDGE is consistently among the most valued positions on the board. The ability to generate consistent pressure on the quarterback without schematic help is among the rarest and most impactful skills in football.

## Common Confusion

EDGE is not the same as defensive end. A 3-4 outside linebacker who rushes the passer is an EDGE; a 4-3 defensive end who primarily sets the run edge and rarely rushes is not. The label describes the skill set and primary function, not the alignment or the team's official position designation.
