## Definition

An early entrant is a college player who enters the NFL Draft before exhausting their remaining college eligibility—most commonly juniors or redshirt sophomores who declare after their third or fourth year of college rather than completing a full four-year degree program and all eligible seasons.

The NFL requires players to be at least three years removed from high school graduation to enter the draft. Players who meet that threshold can declare early by submitting a formal declaration by the league's deadline, typically in mid-January. Once declared, the player loses all remaining college eligibility.

Early entry decisions are driven by draft projection, injury risk, and financial timing. A player who projects as a first-round pick in his junior year faces significant financial and physical risk by returning for another college season. Agents and advisors typically recommend entry when a player's projected slot represents strong enough guaranteed money to justify the decision. The NFL also offers an Advisory Committee that provides eligible underclassmen with a non-binding draft grade before the declaration deadline.

## Common Confusion

Early entrant and Declaration are related but distinct. Declaration is the formal act of announcing entry. Early Entrant describes the player's status—someone who still had college eligibility remaining when they declared. A senior who declares is not an early entrant; a junior or sophomore who declares is.
