# Duo

## Short Definition

A gap scheme run using a sustained double-team drive block without a pull—generating push at the point of attack through leverage rather than misdirection.

## Definition

Duo is a gap scheme run play that generates movement at the point of attack through sustained double-team drive blocks without a pulling lineman. Both play-side interior linemen—typically the center and guard, or the guard and tackle—double-team adjacent defenders and drive them off the line of scrimmage, creating push that the running back reads and cuts behind. There is no puller, no kick-out block at the edge, and no lead blocker—the concept is built entirely on the premise that two blockers driving one defender creates more movement than any other blocking combination.

The Duo concept became increasingly prominent in the modern NFL as teams sought a short-yardage and goal-line run that didn't require the same pulling guard athleticism that Power and Counter demand. Double-teams are the most physically dominant blocks in football—a defensive tackle who might hold his ground against a single blocker will move when two linemen drive in concert. Duo exploits this by ensuring that every defender in the interior is accounted for by a double-team or combination block.

The running back's read in Duo is interior rather than perimeter—he identifies which double-team is creating the most movement and cuts directly behind the surge. There is no designed cutback away from the flow, no kick-out block to follow, and no pulling lineman to chase. The back must be decisive and downhill, hitting the created space before the linebackers can fill.

Duo's no-pull structure also makes it more easily combined with read-option and RPO concepts than Power—removing the pull simplifies the blocking rules and creates cleaner mesh points for the quarterback's decision-making.

## Example

"Third and one. Center and guard double-team the nose tackle and drive him two yards into the backfield. No pull, no lead block—just two offensive linemen moving one defender. The back hits straight through the gap and gets four yards. That's Duo."

## Common Confusion

Duo is often confused with Power because both are gap schemes that attack inside gaps with double-teams. The distinction is the pull: Power uses a pulling guard to lead through the hole and kick out the edge defender, and typically includes a fullback or H-back lead block. Duo uses no pull—both guards stay in place and double-team adjacent defenders, with the running back reading which double-team creates movement and cutting off the surge.
