# Draw Play

## Short Definition

A run disguised as a pass—the quarterback simulates a drop-back while linemen show pass protection, then hands off to exploit upfield pass rushers.

## Definition

The draw play disguises a run as a pass. The quarterback takes the snap and drops back as if setting up a pass—linemen show pass protection sets, the quarterback holds the ball in throwing position, and the running back initially blocks or releases as if going into a route. Then the quarterback hands off to the back, who runs into a defense that has been drawn upfield by the pass look.

The draw attacks pass rush aggressiveness. Defensive linemen who fly upfield on a pass read create the lanes the runner uses. A 3-technique who penetrates hard past his blocker trying to rush the quarterback has created a gap behind himself. Linebackers who drop into coverage vacate the intermediate middle. The defense's correct response to a pass look becomes the incorrect response when the ball goes to a runner.

Draw plays are most effective on third-and-medium or third-and-long situations where the defense expects pass at high rates, has committed its personnel accordingly, and is rushing aggressively. Running it early in a game establishes the threat and disciplines rushers from overcommitting on later downs.

## Example

"Third and eight—defense expects pass, rushers are flying upfield on the drop. Quarterback sets like he's throwing, hands to the back running against the grain. Both defensive ends are five yards into the backfield. The runner cuts inside them for eleven yards. The draw worked because the defense was right about what they expected."

## Common Confusion

Draw play and delay are used interchangeably. A delay has the runner pause momentarily before taking the ball, but the quarterback isn't necessarily setting up a pass look first. A draw specifically requires the quarterback to simulate pass setup—drop, read, pocket presence—before handing off. The pass fake is the defining characteristic of the draw.
