# Drag Route

## Short Definition

A short crossing route at 3 to 5 yards, run in stride—caught at full speed with yards after the catch as the primary design goal.

## Definition

A drag route is a short crossing route run at 3 to 5 yards just above the line of scrimmage. The receiver releases from his alignment and runs horizontally across the formation, catching the ball in stride and turning upfield. The route's value is all in the yards after the catch—the receiver has open field in front of him at the catch point if he gets the ball while still running.

Linebackers struggle to cover drag routes from inside alignments because their drops take them above the route's depth. Zone defenders in the flat are too outside to close in time. The drag exploits the void between those two coverage levels—below the linebackers, behind the flat defenders.

Drag routes are most dangerous from receivers who are already moving horizontally when they catch the ball. A receiver who slows to catch gives defenders time to close. A receiver who catches it in full stride at 4 yards can turn a 4-yard throw into a 12-yard gain against disorganized pursuit.

## Example

"Tight end releases from the line and drags across the formation at four yards. The linebacker is at eight, the flat defender is outside. The drag runs right through the void between them, catches in stride, turns upfield. Two defenders missed him because neither one owned that exact space."

## Common Confusion

Drag and shallow are used interchangeably and describe essentially the same route. The difference is framing: shallow is the Air Raid system's label for the same route concept—a short crossing action at 3 to 5 yards run in stride. Drag is the general-vocabulary term. Drag routes are also sometimes confused with crossing routes, which run deeper (8-12 yards). The defining characteristic of both drag and shallow is the low depth—just above the linebackers' knees.
