# Draft Rounds

## Short Definition

Day 1 is round 1, Day 2 is rounds 2–3, Day 3 is rounds 4–7—broadcast shorthand that doubles as prospect grade shorthand across the evaluation industry.

## Definition

The NFL Draft runs across three days, each carrying different strategic weight. Day 1 is the first round—32 picks, the highest-value selections, and the most public attention. Players taken here carry first-round grades and are expected to contribute quickly. Day 2 covers rounds 2 and 3—where value-conscious front offices find starters and key contributors at lower cost. Day 3 covers rounds 4 through 7—depth picks, developmental players, scheme fits, and camp bodies competing for roster spots.

The day structure shapes how teams plan their boards. First-round selections receive the most preparation and are made by the full front office. Later rounds involve more area scouts as the draft extends deeper into the board.

The day labels are now standard in prospect grading. A "Day 2 player" means a scout projects rounds 2 or 3. A "Day 3 value" means someone worth taking in the later rounds. These labels give evaluators quick shorthand for where a player fits on the board without citing a specific round or pick number.

## Example

"Everyone agrees he's a Day 2 player—the talent is real but not first-round. The question is whether he goes early Day 2 in round two or slips to Day 3 if his medical comes back with concerns."

## Common Confusion

Day 1, Day 2, and Day 3 are broadcast shorthand, not official NFL designations. The NFL organizes the draft by rounds. Day 1 is round 1. Day 2 is rounds 2 and 3. Day 3 is rounds 4 through 7.
