Draft range is the span of picks where analysts and scouts project a prospect is likely to be selected—expressed as a window rather than a single pick because draft outcomes depend on how the board falls, which teams have needs at the position, and whether trades alter the order.

A player described as a "late first to early second" has a draft range spanning roughly picks 25 through 40. That window reflects consensus evaluation: first-round talent who may slip depending on which teams pick ahead and which positions dominate the top of the board.

Draft range narrows as the draft approaches and team needs become clearer. A wide range signals evaluation uncertainty or fit questions. A tight range signals strong consensus. Where a player lands relative to his projected range determines whether the pick is called a reach, a value selection, or a steal.

## Example

"His range is late first to mid-second—talented enough that someone in the twenties takes him, but if he slips past 32 the board gets complicated. A lot depends on who's picking in that window."

## Common Confusion

Draft range and draft grade are related but different. A grade is the tier assigned to a player's talent level. A range is the specific pick window where he projects to be selected—which can differ from his grade based on positional value, class depth, and team needs across the league.
