## Definition

A draft pick is a team's right to make a selection in a specific round of a specific NFL Draft. Picks are assets—they exist before the draft occurs and can be bought, sold, traded, or accumulated as part of roster-building strategy. A team that trades a player for "a third-round pick" is receiving the right to select a player in the third round of a future draft, not a player itself.

Picks vary in value by round and position within the round. A first-round pick is the most valuable selection category; a late-seventh-round pick is nearly interchangeable with undrafted free agent signings. Within each round, earlier picks access better talent and are worth more in trade negotiations.

Picks can also be conditional—subject to certain performance thresholds before they convert. A "conditional third-round pick that becomes a second if the player makes the Pro Bowl" is a common structure in player trades. Conditional picks allow the sending team to limit downside if the player they're trading away overperforms.

## Example

"They traded a veteran wide receiver for a second-round pick and a future fourth. They didn't get a player—they got rights to make two future selections. Those picks are assets on the balance sheet until the team uses them on draft day."

## Common Confusion

A draft pick and a draft selection are often used interchangeably. The distinction worth knowing is that a draft pick is an asset—a right to make a selection—that exists before the selection is made and can be traded. Once exercised, it becomes a drafted player. Teams trade picks, not selections; the pick is the currency.
