# Draft Grade

## Short Definition

A prospect's evaluated talent tier—"first-round grade," "Day 2 grade," or "draftable"—indicating where scouts and analysts believe he should be selected.

## Definition

A draft grade is the tier or evaluation rating assigned to a prospect by a scouting department or analyst, indicating what level of player the evaluator believes him to be and where he should be selected. Internal team grades are expressed numerically on proprietary scales; broadcast and media grades use terminology like "first-round grade," "Day 2 grade," "top-50 grade," or "draftable."

The grade represents a conclusion about a player's value—separate from where he will actually be drafted. A player can have a first-round grade from one team and a third-round grade from another, and those disagreements produce reaches, steals, and trade-ups. When multiple teams converge on similar grades, consensus forms and the board tightens.

The term "draftable" represents the threshold grade—a player who has earned a rating indicating some team should select him in the seven rounds. Players without a draftable grade are long shots to be selected and typically pursue the undrafted free agent market.

## Example

"He has a first-round grade on our board—we don't care where the experts say he'll go. If he's there when we pick, we're taking him. The grade is the grade."

## Common Confusion

Draft grade and draft range are different. A grade is the talent tier assigned to a player's evaluation—what he is worth. A range is where he is expected to actually be selected, which can differ from his grade based on class depth, positional value, and team needs across the league.
