The full group of eligible prospects available in a given NFL Draft year—class quality varies and shapes how aggressively teams pursue positions.

## Definition

A draft class is the full group of eligible prospects entering the NFL Draft in a given year—the collective talent pool available to all 32 teams. Class quality varies significantly year to year. A historically deep class might have four or five elite prospects at premium positions; a weak class might have a significant drop-off after the first few picks.

Draft class evaluation shapes how teams approach the offseason. A strong quarterback class pushes teams to position themselves to select early. A thin class at a specific position may push teams to address that need in free agency rather than wait for the draft.

Classes are also graded retrospectively—years after the draft, analysts assess which class produced the most contributors. The retrospective grade often differs from pre-draft consensus because prospects develop at different rates.

## Example

"The 2004 class had four quarterbacks taken in the first round who all started for years. The 2013 quarterback class was historically weak. Class quality shapes how aggressively teams move up to address a position."

## Common Confusion

Draft class and draft picks are different. The draft class is the full group of prospects available in a given year before any team makes a selection. A strong draft class refers to prospect quality, not the picks any team made.
