## Definition

Draft capital is a team's total collection of current and future draft picks—the aggregate asset value held in the form of selection rights. High draft capital means a team has accumulated multiple picks across rounds and years, giving them more opportunities to add talent and more leverage in trade negotiations. Low draft capital means a team has traded away selections and must be more selective about when and how it drafts.

Draft capital is spent in trades—moving up to a higher pick costs picks, and receiving picks by trading down replenishes capital. Teams that trade up for quarterbacks typically deplete their capital significantly, betting that the player justifies the concentration of assets. Teams in rebuilds often accumulate capital by trading veterans for future picks.

The value of draft capital is distributed unevenly across rounds. First-round picks carry the most value; seventh-round picks are nearly interchangeable with undrafted free agent signings. Trade value charts attempt to quantify each pick's relative worth so teams can negotiate equivalent exchanges.

## Example

"They've traded their first-round pick three years in a row for veterans. Their draft capital is depleted. When this window closes, they won't have the picks to rebuild quickly. Draft capital is the long game—you always pay it back eventually."

## Common Confusion

Draft capital and draft picks are not the same thing. A pick is a single selection in a specific round and year. Draft capital is the aggregate value of all picks a team holds—across all rounds and all years. A team with three first-round picks and five seconds has more capital than one with a single first, even if both have a pick at 15 overall.
