# Down

## Short Definition

A single unit of play from the snap to the whistle; the offense has a set number of downs to advance the ball past the zone-to-gain marker.

## Definition

Each play is called a down. The offense begins a series with a set of downs—typically 3 in NFL FLAG and 4 in USA Football formats—to advance the ball past midfield or to score. The down count resets when the offense crosses the zone-to-gain marker.

If the offense fails to cross the marker within its allotted downs, possession transfers to the defense at the spot of the ball. The current down and yards to the zone marker are tracked and communicated after every play.

## Example

"It's 3rd down and the offense needs 6 yards to cross midfield. They have one more play before it turns over if they don't make it."

## Common Confusion

A down is not a tackle. In tackle football a down ends when the ball carrier is brought to the ground. In flag football a down ends when the flag is pulled, the carrier steps out of bounds, or a pass is incomplete. The down count advances regardless of how the play ends.
