A positional ranking of every player in order of standing—starter to backups—used to assess where a drafted player fits and how soon they can contribute.

## Definition

A depth chart lists every player at each position in order of standing on the team—starter at the top, backups descending by readiness and trust. Teams maintain internal depth charts for practice planning and game prep; official depth charts are released weekly during the season for public reference.

In draft evaluation, depth chart analysis determines where a prospect slots on the team selecting them—whether they start from day one, compete for a role, or develop as depth. A player drafted behind an established starter faces a longer path to playing time, affecting development speed and leverage at the next contract.

During the draft broadcast, depth chart context shapes every pick: "they have a clear need at corner," "he slots in immediately as their left tackle," and "he's a year away from starting" are all real-time depth chart assessments.

## Example

"He goes to a team with a clear need at the position—walks into a starting job on day one. That's as good a landing spot as you can draw up for a player at this stage."

## Common Confusion

The depth chart is not fixed. It updates constantly based on performance, injury, and roster moves. A player listed as starter in August is often not the starter by October—the depth chart is the current best estimate, not a permanent assignment.
