# Deflagging

## Short Definition

The legal removal of a flag from a ball carrier who has possession—the flag football equivalent of a tackle.

## Definition

Deflagging is the foundational defensive act in flag football, replacing the physical tackle.

The act must target the flag, not the player's body. If a flag inadvertently falls off during play, the ball carrier is ruled down at the spot where the flag lands. If a player has zero or one flag at the time they receive the ball, they are downed immediately on possession.

## Example

"Jefferson was deflagged at the 15-yard line after a 12-yard gain—clean pull by the corner."

## Common Confusion

Often confused with tackling. Also confused with the flag falling off inadvertently, which is a dead ball, not a deflag.
