# Defensive Back

## Short Definition

A defensive player—cornerback or safety—responsible for covering receivers and defending against the pass in the secondary.

## Definition

In flag football, defensive backs are the core of the defense. With no defensive linemen rushing from the line of scrimmage, every defender is either a designated rusher or a defensive back. Cornerbacks cover outside and slot receivers; safeties protect the deep middle and provide coverage help.

Defensive backs play man-to-man coverage, zone assignments, or a combination depending on the defensive call. In 5v5 flag, a single designated rusher leaves four defensive backs to cover the field—alignment, discipline, and communication among those four players determines how well the defense performs.

Because physical contact with receivers is illegal in flag football, defensive backs rely entirely on positioning, anticipation, and flag-pulling technique rather than jamming or tackling.

## Example

"The cornerback reads the inside release off the line, maintains hip leverage in trail coverage, and breaks on the ball at the catch point. Clean technique—that's a defensive back doing her job."

## Common Confusion

In 5v5 flag football, all non-rushing defenders function as defensive backs regardless of where they align. There is no equivalent to a linebacker in the traditional sense—the position blends into the secondary. In 7v7, an additional linebacker-type defender covers the intermediate zone.
