# Declaration

## Short Definition

A player's formal decision to enter the NFL Draft—underclassmen must declare by a deadline; seniors with exhausted eligibility are automatically eligible.

## Definition

Declaration is the formal process by which an underclassman announces his intention to enter the NFL Draft before exhausting his college eligibility. The NFL sets an annual deadline—typically in mid-January—by which underclassmen must submit their declaration. Players who miss the deadline remain in college for another season.

The declaration decision is one of the most consequential a young player makes. Declaring too early—before the NFL talent level is fully developed—can result in a lower draft position than waiting. Declaring too late means forgoing professional income and draft capital that could have been earned a year earlier. The timing calculus depends on draft grade, injury risk, scholarship situation, and family circumstances.

The NFL provides an underclassmen advisory committee that gives prospects unofficial feedback on their projected draft range before the deadline. Players who receive first-round feedback have a clearer case for declaring; those receiving lower grades must weigh whether another college season improves their stock enough to justify the wait.

## Example

"Junior season, first-team All-American, projected top-10 pick. He declares. The calculus is clear: another year of college doesn't move the needle but adds injury risk. Declaration is the right call when the grade is already where you need it to be."

## Common Confusion

Declaring and being eligible are different thresholds. A player is eligible when he meets the NFL's requirements—typically three years removed from high school graduation. Declaring is the formal act of announcing intent to enter the draft, which underclassmen must do by the deadline. Missing the deadline locks a player out for that year.
