# Dead Cap

## Short Definition

The cap charge remaining after a player is released or traded—unamortized signing bonus money that counts against the cap even though the player is gone.

## Definition

Dead cap is the salary cap charge that remains after a player has been released, traded, or otherwise removed from a roster. It represents the unamortized portion of a signing bonus—when a player is cut before his contract expires, the prorated bonus money that would have spread across future years accelerates and counts against the current cap all at once.

A team carrying heavy dead cap is penalized for past roster decisions. The cap charge for a player not on the roster constrains flexibility available for current players. Teams with significant dead cap often restructure contracts, roll over cap space, or accept reduced flexibility in free agency as the accumulated cost of previous contract decisions.

Dead cap becomes particularly visible in the offseason following a high-profile release or trade. When a team parts ways with a veteran on a large deal, analysts immediately calculate the dead cap penalty to understand the true cost of the move.

## Example

"They released him but still carry $18 million in dead cap this season—paying him to play for someone else. That's why they couldn't afford to trade up tonight."

## Common Confusion

Dead cap is not the same as cap space used on a current player. It is money counting against the cap for a player no longer on the roster—a penalty for a past decision. High dead cap limits flexibility even when expensive veterans have already been released.
